Research by Michael Kitces and Wade Pfau confirm that the rule is still a reasonable rule of thumb for figuring out how much you need to retire.

  2. 25 times that amount to enable you to withdraw at a 4% “safe withdrawal rate

According to the website Numbeo, the cost of living for a four-person family without rent or a mortgage is $3,027.41 per month. Rent in a 3-bedroom apartment in the city center is $1,769.58 per month, and rent outside the city center is $1,461.07. That’s probably the difference between living in West 7th and living in Southside. So, we’ll split the difference and say that the average rent is $1,615.33 per month.
